Obituary for Andrew Edwin Kabanuk

Andrew E. Kabanuk
Aug. 26, 1922 – Nov. 7, 2018

Early Wednesday morning, November 7, Andrew (Andy) Kabanuk, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away in his home in College Place, Washington. He was 96 years old.

Andy was born in Dunn County, North Dakota, near the Killdeer Mountains. He attended the local one-room school through eighth grade before starting high school. He graduated from Sheyenne River Academy in Harvey, North Dakota in 1941. After WWII (which he spent working in the shipyards in California), he met and married his beloved wife, Dorothy Aichele. They had been married for 69 years at the time of his passing.

Further education took him to Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where he received a B.S. degree in Biology. Then he studied at Western States College of Chiropractic and National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR, receiving his N.D. degree. He practiced Naturopathy for one year before joining United Medical Laboratories where he was an administrator in several areas; the last being Cytotechnology. In 1974, after 20 years living in Portland, the Kabanuk family moved to Walla Walla, where Andy was employed with the Davis/Sameh/Meeker Laboratories until retirement.

Andrew was active in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in various localities and positions through the years. Though unable to attend church in person in recent years, he faithfully watched weekly services on Blue Mountain Television. Being a forever scholar, Andy spent many leisure hours reading and always learning something new. He had a particular fondness for poetry, often surprising his family with the numerous poems he had committed to memory. He also enjoyed traveling, camping, and caring for his yard and garden.

Andy will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Dorothy Kabanuk; his children, Valerie Chapin, Gregory Kabanuk (Sharon), and Cynthia Sorensen (Melvin); his eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Andy is also fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family, as well as by his many dear friends. Andy was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Mountain Television, 1200 SE 12th St., Suite 2, College Place, WA 99324

Service plans are pending, but will likely be held in the spring.
