Richard Rolfe Madson “Dick” passed away with his family by his side on March 15, 2019 at Providence St. Mary Medical Center. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 6th at 4pm at the Milton Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Dick was born on May 27th, 1934 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to James and Hildur Madson. He attended the Upper Columbia Academy where he met his future wife Kathryn. After graduating in 1952, he went on to attend Walla Walla College. Dick and Kathryn were married in 1953, and they had two daughters; Kristi and Karie. He graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in business. Dick interned with Niemi, Holland & Scott and later was hired as an accountant. While there he obtained his CPA license.
In 1959 he accepted a position as an accountant for a small regional airline, Western Alaska Airlines in Dillingham Alaska. In 1960 he became involved in the commercial salmon fishery at Ekuk Alaska. He was a tireless and innovative fisherman and continuously worked at making the process easier and more efficient. During this time he was also part of several commercial enterprises and other business ventures. In 1973 Dick moved his family to Kodiak, Alaska when the airlines merged with Kodiak Airways. While there, he helped Maranatha build and establish the first local Seventh-day Adventist Church. He also built several homes and commercial properties. In 1995 he left Alaska and moved back to Walla Walla where he became passionately involved in a new volunteer ministry, Gospel Outreach, and dedicated his time and energy to its growth and success.
Dick leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Kathryn Madson, two daughters; Kristi (Dale) Christofferson, Karie Madson, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
